Current UK Legalisation Office timing depends on the service route. GOV.UK currently states that the standard paper apostille service usually takes up to 25 working days, plus return delivery time. An eligible e-Apostille can take up to 2 working days. Separate next-day and restricted urgent paper services are available only to registered businesses and have their own conditions.
Those are government processing periods, not a guaranteed end-to-end turnaround for every document. Certification, notarisation, signature verification, courier time and any destination-country attestation can add time before or after the apostille itself.
If you need the full legalisation route rather than timing alone, see our UK apostille service. For pricing, use the separate UK apostille cost guide.
UK apostille processing times at a glance
| Legalisation Office route | Current published processing period | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
| Standard paper apostille | Usually up to 25 working days | Add courier or postage time |
| e-Apostille | Up to 2 working days | Only for eligible electronic documents |
| Next-Day paper service | Next working day | Registered businesses only |
| Restricted Urgent paper service | Same day | Registered businesses only; application must be pre-approved |
The Legalisation Office also warns that any of these services can take longer if, for example, a signature needs additional verification. Check the current GOV.UK legalisation page when you are ready to apply because processing periods can change.
Why your total apostille timeline can be longer
The document may need certification first
Some documents can be legalised in their official form. Others need certification by an appropriate UK public official, such as a solicitor or notary, before the Legalisation Office can process them. That preparation time is separate from the published apostille processing period.
Paper documents also need delivery time
The standard paper service requires physical document handling and return by courier or post. The published government timeframe does not mean the document will necessarily be back in your hands on the final processing day.
Apostille may not be the final destination step
Depending on the destination country and receiving authority, the apostilled document may then need embassy, consular, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, translation or other authentication. If your document will be used in the UAE, see our guide to attesting UK documents for use in the UAE.
Is e-Apostille always the fastest option?
For an eligible document, e-Apostille has the shortest standard published processing period. But it is not available for every document and the receiving organisation must be willing to accept the electronic format.
Current GOV.UK guidance excludes several document categories from e-Apostille, including General Register Office birth, death, marriage, civil partnership and adoption certificates, ACRO police certificates for England and Wales, DBS certificates and certain other records.
What can delay a UK apostille?
- The document needs solicitor or notary certification before legalisation.
- The signature, stamp or seal requires additional verification.
- The wrong document version or apostille format is submitted.
- The receiving authority requires a paper apostille instead of an e-Apostille.
- Physical documents need courier or postal delivery.
- Further embassy or destination-country authentication is required afterwards.
Many of these delays can be prevented before submission. See the separate guide to common UK apostille mistakes.
How to plan around a deadline
Work backwards from the date the overseas organisation needs the completed document. Allow time for document preparation, the appropriate Legalisation Office service, return delivery and any further destination-country steps. Do not treat an urgent service as a substitute for preparing the correct document first.
If you are unsure whether your document is eligible in its current form, check the UK apostille documents guide or send the document type and destination requirements to First Elite Global for review.
